As a homeowner, it might be tempting to invest in a brand new furnace. There are so many different things that could cause your heating system to become less effective over the years. As a whole, the system is complicated so there are many components and potential fail points that might affect your furnaces ability to heat your house. This is why it is always a good idea to have your furnace and heating system serviced before deciding to buy such an expensive new appliance. But, before you call in the professionals, there are a few things that you can do in the meantime.

The Importance of the Simple Repairs

These are basic maintenance tasks that homeowners can do on their own to fix immediate problems with their furnace system. It is worth noting that these are jobs that will probably need to be repeated several times over the lifetime of a traditional furnace. It is also important to realize that even the small repairs, though they seem so basic, can have a big effect on your system. For instance, a dirty furnace filter can ultimately reduce air flow into the unit, causing the furnace pump to work harder and suck up more energy. This, in turn, puts more stress on the furnace pump and its components. The inevitable outcome is that your furnace will have a reduced lifespan if you don't regularly change the filter. Changing the filter is a self explanatory job, so the rest of this article will focus on a more obscure, but nonetheless important maintenance task.

Clean the Furnace Evaporator

The evaporator is one of the most important components in a central heating and air conditioning system. The great thing about cleaning your evaporator is not only that is easy, but it also improves your air conditioner too. The evaporator unit on a furnace system is complicated, but cleaning it is not. When you open up your main furnace cabinet you should be able to see the evaporator. In some cases evaporator will be inside it's own compartment within the furnace. Either way, it should be clearly marked and easy to identify because it is made out of distinct copper coils arranged in a pyramid shape. All you have to do to clean the coils is wipe them down thoroughly. They are a little bit fragile so try not to bend the copper. The most important thing is to get any dust or gunk that is stuck in between the coil tubes.

This is just one of a few easy things you can do to keep your heating system in top order.
